Harper PR Celebrates Second Anniversary
March 1st marks two years in business as Harper PR! Time sure does fly when you’re having the time of your life, eh?
On February 28, 2011, I left the agency world and wasn’t sure what I was going to do next. I just knew I wanted a different experience. I had agency and job offers, and then I had a few people tell me they’d hire me if I decided to be an independent consultant. I didn’t know if I was ready to take the leap. I didn’t have huge savings, but I did have the support of my friends and family, and my dad told me to ‘GO FOR IT!’ And I did.
Two years hasn’t been easy, but it’s been beyond rewarding. My lovely friend, Nicole, texted me and told me she was at a presentation given by a well-known and successful agency owner who said a business hardly ever makes money in its first year, and a business owner can only hope to make enough to make it to year two.
It made me think about a motto I have lived by since I started my career in PR – do what you love, and the money will come.
The last two years, I have been fortunate to do what I love. I’m lucky that I can even celebrate a two year anniversary – I know many have not. And, I’m thrilled that year three is looking to be even bigger and better than the first two combined.
I am not a millionaire – not even close. I don’t aspire to be one either. I don’t measure success by bank balance.
How I measure success for myself is that I’m in a position to take on the client projects I choose – not be forced to take on work to make ends meet. I aspire to have a reputation of practicing with honesty and integrity, and be known for not compromising my character to ‘get ahead’ in business. I aspire to say my clients are also friends because we share the same sense of passion and care for their business. I aspire to always learn from mentors, but to always inspire and teach others too. I aspire to never run out of tenacity, and to always build my talent and expertise to compliment it. I aspire to grow (cautiously and realistically) and to always be in a position to support the community and causes I believe in. I aspired to have my clients recognized for their talents and offerings.
I’m thankful. Beyond thankful.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me, believed in me, trusted me and recommended me. You have helped me to live the dream.
Here’s to the next two…10…25 years!
